What is Underwater Welding & Pile Repair?
Underwater welding restores structural steel without dry-docking the vessel or de-mobilising a jetty. The two methods are wet welding (direct underwater, lower cost, fit for non-critical sections) and dry hyperbaric welding (in a sealed habitat, class-quality welds for primary structural members). Pile repair combines welding with steel plate doublers, sleeves, jacket reinforcement and protective coatings.
When do you need Underwater Welding & Pile Repair?
- Vessel collision or impact damage — cracks, dents, plate tears below waterline
- Pile section loss — corrosion-driven thickness reduction approaching design minimum
- Weld defect rectification — failed inspection at a previous repair
- Jetty extension or modification — adding bracing, fenders or fittings
- Emergency leak stoppage — temporary welded patch ahead of permanent repair
Our Underwater Welding Process
- Damage survey — diver-led visual + UTG measurements + photo log
- Repair engineering — class-approved Weld Procedure Specification (WPS) + Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)
- Surface preparation — water-jet cleaning, grinding to bright metal
- Welding — AWS D3.6M certified divers, wet or hyperbaric per scope
- NDT verification — visual inspection + UT/MPI as required, class witness

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Wet welding or hyperbaric — which do I need?
Ans: Wet welding for non-critical, secondary members and temporary repairs. Hyperbaric welding for primary structural welds, class-survey welds and high-pressure pipework. We’ll recommend the right method during the damage survey.
Q2. Is the weld accepted by my class society?
Ans: Yes — we work to AWS D3.6M Class A (hyperbaric) and Class B (wet) standards, both accepted by ABS, BV, DNV, LR, NK and IRS for the appropriate applications.
Q3. How quickly can you mobilise?
Ans: For emergency repairs, we mobilise within 6 hours from our Beach Road base. Standard scopes are quoted within 2 hours.
