Underwater UTG (Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging) Singapore | West Squadron
Underwater UTG (Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging) in Singapore by West Squadron Marine — accurate residual-thickness measurements on vessel hulls, jetty piles, sea chests and offshore steelwork without dry-docking. ASNT / PCN Level II certified diver-inspectors, class-approved reports. Call +65 8388 0288.
What is Underwater UTG?
Underwater UTG uses an ultrasonic transducer pressed against cleaned steel to measure remaining thickness in millimetres, with accuracy typically ±0.1 mm. The diver carries the probe; data streams to a surface inspector for live evaluation against class acceptance criteria. UTG is the standard non-destructive test for hull plate, pile section loss, sea-chest grating and any submerged steel where wastage matters.
When do you need Underwater UTG?
- Class hull plate survey — Special Survey, Continuous Hull Survey, IACS thickness measurements
- Pile integrity programme — annual residual-thickness check on jetty / wharf piles
- Post-incident assessment — verifying section loss after grounding or impact
- UWILD scope — UTG accompanies the underwater survey for class acceptance
- Pre-purchase due diligence — buyer verification of advertised condition
Our UTG Process
- Measurement plan — points agreed with client engineer and class surveyor against IACS / class scheme
- Surface preparation — water-jet cleaning to bright metal at each measurement point
- UTG measurement — Olympus 38DL Plus or equivalent, calibrated to plate temperature, 5 readings per point
- Live transmission — surface inspector views every reading in real time
- Class report — measurement table vs as-built thickness, % loss, class acceptance status, photo evidence

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How accurate is underwater UTG?
Ans: Typical accuracy ±0.1 mm with proper surface preparation. We take 5 readings per point and report the lowest as the conservative residual-thickness value.
Q2. How many UTG points can you do per dive?
Ans: Typically 50–80 points per diver-day depending on access and required cleaning. A full hull plate scheme of 500 points takes 2–3 days.
Q3. Will the UTG report be accepted by my class society?
Ans: Yes — we deliver in IACS Form J or your class society’s required format with full traceability of equipment calibration and inspector certification.
